In honor of Dick Westfall, act today to save the...
Make a call today - it will take you less than one minute - to your state senator and ask that they support SB1566. It could save many programs at the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, including the defunct Illinois Bike Path Program. Illinois’ fight over pension legislation rages on today in Springfield. The cuts are deep. Trying to gain traction is SB1566, the Illinois...

– Spencer Smith, Normal Community High School senior, in this great piece by WJBC’s Ryan Denham on the high school senior class’s effort to get teens to park the cars and pedal instead. Teens as trail advocates—this is blowing my mind.

Kendall County Highway Department proposes... →
Here’s the money paragraph from the Herald-News article: “Klaas said the move is a reflection of societal attitudes toward getting people to walk and bike more, for reasons of personal health and cutting down on use of their cars. Highway Committee Chairman Robert Davidson said it also reflects the state’s new guidelines that include bike trail construction along all highway...

National Park Service Rivers & Trails Conservation...
The National Park Service’s Rivers and Trails Conservation Assistance program has invested $1000 in our vision of an interconnected network of trails across the state of Illinois. We have long benefited from the expertise and energy of the program’s State Coordinator, and the partnership that has developed with the RTCA program. We’ll use these dollars for outreach. We are...

suburbancycle asked: Glad to see there is swimming. I was just checking out google maps to see if there was a pool nearby and there is. I am happy to see we will be able to shower and swim there! I know The Boy will be excited to swim. Although he will want to fish as well. Might be tough doing both.I am happy there are diving boards. I am also happy to see two ice cream shops nearby...

suburbancycle asked: What time does teh gear shuttle close up on Saturday? My son's teeball schedule just came out and it looks like his final game is 7/14. If we burn rubber we can make it to the gear shuttle by 11:30. But I imagine there will be road construction, and I am certain to make at least 1 u-turn. What time do you close up shop and take everything on the road?

Colorado man killed crossing Route 111 on... →
View Larger Map I don’t know enough about this yet to respond. Some questions (in no particular order) about this particular crash— - What’s the geometry of the intersection & the posted speed? - Is there a history of crashes at this intersection? - Was the driver driving too fast for conditions? He saw a bicyclist, presumably there are trail or pedestrian crossing signs...

Standing room only at REI-Lincoln Park’s GITy Up! Overnight Touring Class (there’s one more in Northbrook next Thursday)—I counted 40. Smitty, REI’s own legend in residence, led the class through his own experiences with routes, gear, checking for sprinklers before setting up camp, carrying ice so you’re always ready to buy beer, and the secret joy of camping in...

Crazy Guys Almost Get In a Coal Train's Way →
Read this, particularly Day 3, and I dare you to tell me three things: You’d never climb a trestle to get close-up video of an Illinois coal train You don’t want to ride or run the Tunnel Hill State Trail in Southwest Illinois You think Illinois does a fine job inviting the world to visit our trails and the communities they connect Bruce Gunn’s photo-rich journal of his...

The Illinois Department of Public Health has been working overtime to get this off the ground: We Choose Health, a $25 million, CDC-funded program to award grants to communities & public agencies ready to build a healthier Illinois.
